Does Social Media Keep Us From Being Social?

I haven’t checked Facebook in four days. That’s the longest I’ve gone without checking it since…well since I’ve been on Facebook. Almost 10 years. Unreal.

During the two grueling days of slapping my own finger as it reaches for that blue “F” on my phone, I can’t believe how many times I’ve tried to open Facebook purely out of habit.

  1. In the line at the post office.

  2. Sitting at home with my kid playing alone next to me.

  3. At the dinner table.

  4. During a group conversation with real people sitting right next to me

When I sit back and think about it, I envy these parents from this 2011 Venza commercial.

The “that’s not a real puppy” line cracks me up every time I see her say it.

I want to keep up my stretch of “don’t look at the book” so here are a few actions I’ve tried to take.

  1. Bury the App. I’ve moved my Facebook to the dark abyss of the 4th page of apps on my iPhone. If I need to reach it, by the time I get there, I can usually realize what I’m doing

  2. Realize I’m Not Missing Anything by Not Checking Facebook 10 Times a Day. If anything critical happens, my family or friends will let me know.

  3. Build Accountability. I haven’t done this yet, but I’m going to tell my wife to get my butt off “The Book” if she sees me on it. If I want to be held real accountable, I might even tell her I’ll give her a real massage every time she catches me. She will be on me like a hawk.

I’m hoping I’m not the only one struggling with my social media addiction. Do you have any tips to suggest for using social media less? If so, feel free to comment below.
